Scotland international winger Sean Lamont joined up with the Scotland 7s squad late last night ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s Festival at Murrayfield – the eighth and final leg of the IRB Sevens World Series – as replacement for the injured Thom Evans who has been ruled out with a short term foot injury. The 36-times capped internationalist, who has scored seven tries for the senior national team, admitted today that he was in fact reminiscing of his previous international sevens experience whilst watching the Scotland team reach their first ever Cup semi-final in London on Sky Sports. “I was sitting watching the London Sevens on TV and thinking it would be nice to play some sevens again, especially in such nice weather,” he said. “It was surreal when I got a call from [Scotland 7s coach] Stevie [Gemmell] asking me if I wanted to play. “I feel like the pressure is on me now because the guys put in such a great performance at Twickenham. I’m actually more nervous about this weekend’s tournament than I have been about any of the other games I’ve played in.”

Scotland 7s coach Gemmell added: “Sean’s addition to the squad is great news in terms of bringing in international quality players to the squad. It puts out a real statement about our intentions this weekend and I hope it helps to encourage the Scottish public to come out and support the team. “There’s no-one else the same as Thom [Evans] but Sean gives us terrific pace and power. What’s most important for me is that Sean wants to be here and it’s a great opportunity for him to perform on the international stage again. “I know it’s been a while since Sean played sevens but it’s where he made his name and I’ve no doubt he’ll be a huge asset to the squad.” Scotland 7s squad to compete at the final on the IRB Sevens World Series in Edinburgh (30 and 31 May): Scott Forrest (Ayr)* CAPTAIN, Mike Adamson (Glasgow Warriors), Roddy Grant (West of Scotland)*, Colin Gregor (Glasgow Warriors), Allister Hogg (Edinburgh), John Houston (Edinburgh), Greig Laidlaw (Edinburgh), Sean Lamont (Northampton), Hefin O’Hare (Glasgow Warriors), Colin Shaw (Glasgow Warriors), Jim Thompson (Edinburgh), Andrew Turnbull (Edinburgh) * = Member of Scottish Rugby’s Contracted National Academy Edinburgh Pool C: Kenya, England, Canada, Scotland Scotland 7s’ Pool C fixtures on day one (Saturday 30 May) of the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens Festival: England v Scotland (kick-off 12.09pm), Kenya v Scotland (3.13pm), Canada v Scotland (6.56pm) |
