THE TEAMS

The Teams

There are 16 national teams from around the world taking part in the IRB Sevens World Series finale at Murrayfield – the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s. All the big names in international rugby are represented – from the 7s specialists Fiji to Scotland’s oldest rivals, England, from the powerhouse teams of Australia and New Zealand to reigning Rugby World Cup holders South Africa.

Twelve ‘core’ teams take part in every tournament with a further four invitational teams joining the Edinburgh 7s event (annoucned in May). The quality of the teams is unquestionable. There’s no such thing as an easy game in this Series and all the sides are desperate to perform well at the final event in Edinburgh.  Plus there are plenty of ‘local derbies’ on the fixture list to get the fans excited – who will you be cheering for?

12 ‘CORE’ TEAMS
Argentina – always exciting to watch, the feisty Pumas are looking to go further in the series this year than they did in 2009.
Australia – a dynamic young outfit that is destined to do well and should always be included amongst the series favourites.
England – the new recruits now have experience under their belts and this year could be their breakthrough back to the top
Fiji – right back to top form, with their forward trio regarded as the best in the game. Look out for the magical skills of Tuwai, Burotu and Cakau.
France – haven’t quite replicated the style of play they produce in the 15s game, but always dangerous with their pace and movement.
Kenya – wonderfully entertaining to watch with their superb athleticism and speed.
New Zealand – started out the series on fire but have been hampered by injuries. Expect them to come back with a bang!
Samoa - the form team of the series, they’re a class act with brilliant finishing form.
Scotland – a young squad is improving with each tournament. Likely to do well in front of their home crowd!
South Africa – never leave the Springboks off your short list for the Series title! They're defending their crown and determined to keep their winning streak.
USA – have been on a steep upward curve this year and their converts from American Football have been making a big impact – literally!
Wales – expectations have been high, but a new-look side is maturing and improving with each event.
